Avalanches are the leading cause of death in backcountry ski touring, a rapidly growing activity in which risk management rests on the choices made by practitioners. To inform these choices, Météo-France publishes, every day of the winter season, an avalanche bulletin (BRA) for each massif of the Alps, the Pyrenees and Corsica. Written in the afternoon by snow and avalanche forecasters, it describes the danger expected until the following evening: danger level on the five-level European scale, the elevations and aspects most affected, typical avalanche situations, snowpack stability, snow quality, a weather overview and the trend. The BRA does not tell people where to go: it is a decision-support tool for planning and then carrying out a trip. It is distributed on the Météo-France website and app and relayed by many third-party sites.

Its format has changed considerably: in 2011, the shift from a département-level text to a structured, illustrated bulletin per massif, followed by gradual alignment with European standards (EAWS), with information organised "as a pyramid", pictograms for the danger level and, since 2022, for typical avalanche situations. For the 2026–2027 season, the bulletin will be reorganised around avalanche problems.

These format choices are, however, made by avalanche specialists and forecasters — experts in the snowpack but not in communication or ergonomics. They rely largely on beliefs about what "works" and what does not, and are assessed informally with a handful of practitioners close to the forecasting services, most of them experienced and trained, and therefore hardly representative. In the end, little is known, in any systematic way, about what practitioners actually read, understand and do with the BRA.

Two studies have already been carried out by the CEN and PACTE.
The first (Lefebvre and Mandard, 2024) focused on the production of the bulletin: despite a national reference framework, the writing remains heterogeneous from one forecaster to another (many synonyms, personal styles), with recurring terms that can be confusing.
The second (Gruet, 2025) focused on its reception, based on 17 semi-structured interviews with ski tourers of varied profiles, confronted with real bulletins.

Reading is highly selective and centred on the danger level, which leads the less trained to binary "go / no-go" reasoning. The aspect rose is often misinterpreted, technical vocabulary is an obstacle, and typical avalanche situations are understood intuitively but little used. Level 3, although perceived as serious, is nonetheless widely accepted. Training, more than experience, makes it possible to move from a fragmented reading to an analytical one. These results are based on a small Grenoble-area sample and on self-reported accounts: they identify mechanisms but do not allow any generalisation.
